We gave our compadres a lift back to Kanab and by pure coincidence, we were staying at the same RV park ( Kanab RV Corral)! We did too, but we were able to get unstuck by sliding floor mats underneath the tires and pushing. Unfortunately, our followers got real stuck. We put our Ford F-150 in reverse to turnaround in hopes of finding a better way out. We didn’t know about exiting via 102M, so we attempted the uphill portion of 102 and couldn’t get through. When we went to Red Canyon Slot in October 2019, some folks in a new Jeep Cherokee asked to follow us out because they were a bit lost. This takes you back to Kanab Canyon Road which passes by a mysterious enclave owned by Best Friends Animal Sanctuary. Be sure to air down your tires and on the way out, take the dirt road marked 102M on maps. Those with 4WD should take extra precautions not to get stuck in the aforementioned deep sand. Anyone can walk through the canyon’s swirling, twisting, and contorted sandstone walls, but those without 4WD will have to hike 4 miles through deep sand just to reach its entrance. Unlike many slot canyons that fit this description, part of Red Canyon Slot is non-technical, meaning you can go through it without rappelling. In a region with world-renowned and overcrowded slot canyons like the Narrows in nearby Zion National Park and Antelope Canyon in Navajo Nation, people seem to forget that there are plenty of spectacular areas to explore that are still primitive wilderness. ![]() While Las Vegas has so many more hikes to offer than just those found in Red Rock Canyon, the stunning natural beauty found here is definitely the crown jewel of the Las Vegas region.A few miles north of Kanab, there’s a magnificent slot canyon colloquially called “Peekaboo Canyon” but named “Red Canyon Slot” on maps. Finally, to head deep into one of the scenic canyons on a rugged, little-maintained trail, try the Icebox Canyon hike on for size. Located before Calico Tanks along the one-way scenic drive, the Calico Hills trail runs along the base of this stunning sandstone formation.įor a longer loop hike, the White Rock Loop circumnavigates the mountain by the same name, providing a 6.2-mile loop hike. Once you're in the park, you have an incredible array of trails to choose from! The most challenging parking lot to get a spot in serves the Calico Tanks and Turtlehead Peak trails-easily two of the best hikes in the park. With an America the Beautiful pass, it's only $2. Without a national parks pass, the entry fee is $15 at the time of this writing. To help alleviate this overcrowding, the BLM has recently instituted an hour-by-hour reservation system for getting into the park. Getting a parking spot on the weekend is incredibly challenging, and you'll often have to get up with the sun to score a parking spot at the best trailheads. "Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area is enjoyed by the local population as well as visitors from the United States and many foreign countries," according to the Bureau of Land Management. The incredible natural beauty and the fame of the area make Red Rock Canyon correspondingly popular. But Red Rock Canyon also offers plenty of attractions for adventurers with less vertical persuasion. Red Rock Canyon is home to world-class rock climbing, made famous by the international phenom of Alex Honnold, who now calls Las Vegas home in the winter months. This idyllic reserve protects a staggering formation of towering red rock cliffs, rolling sandstone bluffs, and an untrammeled mountain range that forms the western skyline for the local residents.
